Schools Reopening in Kenya for Term 2 Postponed by the MoE to 6th May

Term 2 schools opening date postponed by one week, Ministry of Education states.

Schools Reopening in Kenya for Term 2 that was set for 29th April has been rescheduled to 6th May 2024. The decision comes after the Ministry of Education led by CS Machogu analyzed the situation following the heavy downpour that has caused floods in some parts of the country.

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Ezekiel Machogu extends schools’ second term opening dates by one week to May 6, 2024 due to ongoing heavy rains.

“In the face of the ongoing heavy rains, the Ministry of Education last week directed its field officers to submit data from all Basic Learning Institution countrywide to assist the Government in assessing the readiness of the schools tor Second Term opening on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Reports received at the Ministry of Education, corroborated with data from other relevant Government agencies showing that a number of schools in various regions of the country have been adversely affected by the rains.”

“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools is so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities.

Based on the assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024.

In the meantime the Ministry will work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to put in place measures to mitigate the adverse affects of the rains and provide regular updates on all developments as pertains to the education sector.” Reads the Ministry of Education Statement signed by Dr. Ezekiel Machogu EGH the Cabinet Secretary – Ministry of Education.
